TURKISH FLAT STEEL IMPORTS: Volumes up only 0.2% in 2019

Turkey’s flat steel import volumes increased by 0.22% year-on-year in 2019, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) last week.

The Middle Eastern country imported 6,924,046 tonnes of flat steel in January-December 2019, up from 6,908,686 tonnes in 2018.
The decrease was largely due to weak demand for steel in Turkey’s local market through 2019, especially in the first half of the year, sources said.
Imports of hot-rolled coil from the EU into Turkey increased in 2019, and Turkish producers reported their concerns about this.
