OUTLOOK: Demand stable in US for 2020; recovery expected in Brazil, Irepas says

Demand for long steel in the United States market will be steady in 2020 while Brazil’s steel sector is expected to recover this year, the International Rebar Producers & Exporters Association (Irepas) said on February 5.

The United States
Steel supply increased in the US due to a growth in domestic production and more imports from Section 232-exempt countries, Irepas noted.
The United States produced 87.9 million tonnes of crude steel in 2019, 1.50% more than 86.6 million tonnes produced in 2018 according to World Steel Association. This was up from 81.6 million tonnes in 2017.
The US imposed Section 232 duties in March 23, 2018, comprising 25% import taxes for all steel imports into the country and 10% for aluminum imports.
Steel shipments from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and South Korea to the US are exempt from the duties.
