Coronavirus outbreak leads to tungsten supply shortage in China

China will experience a supply shortage of tungsten concentrates and ammonium paratungstate (APT) in early 2020 due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

Many miners and APT plants are unable to resume production or are only able to run at a very low operational rates in February, according to market sources.

“As far as I know, only downstream alloy plants have resumed operations because of the high level of machine automation,” a trader source said. “Mines and APT plants are people intensive, and they continue to face challenges to resuming production under the strict anti-epidemic requirements,” he added.
