Codelco gets approval for $1bln Salvador mine expansion

Chilean state-owned copper miner Codelco has received an environmental permit for a $1 billion expansion of its Salvador unit, the company said on Friday February 28.

Codelco’s Rajo Inca investment aims to convert the aging Salvador mine from an underground mine to an open pit and access 900 million tonnes of ore.
This will boost production to more than 90,000 tonnes per year of refined copper from current levels of 60,000 tpy.
