US standard pipe prices flat; virus prompts shipping concerns

Prices for mechanical tubing have ticked up slightly and standard pipe prices remained mostly flat month on month in the United States, while market participants have expressed concerns about logistical issues and uncertain sentiment due to novel coronavirus.

Fastmarkets' monthly price assessment for steel welded mechanical tubing ASTM A513, fob mill US ticked up to $900-940 per short ton ($45-47 per hundredweight) on Tuesday March 10, up from $890-920 per ton in February. Earlier this month, tube mills increased prices for hollow structural sections and other welded products by $40 per ton ($2 per cwt) due to increased substrate costs. “Technically [the increase is] where the market is, but there’s no transactions being done,” one producer said. “The original equipment manufacturers are pretty much in trouble with import stuff that’s not coming in....
