Car manufacturer Groupe PSA – maker of the Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and Vauxhall brands – has decided to close its plants in Europe, it said on Monday.
It opted to close a number of production sites until March 27 “due to the acceleration observed in recent days of serious cases of Covid-19 [the disease caused by the coronavirus] close to certain production sites, supply disruptions from major suppliers, as well as the sudden decline in the automobile markets.”
Units in Mulhouse, France, and in Madrid, Spain, were to be closed on Monday.
Production sites in Poissy, Rennes and Sochaux in France; Zaragoza in Spain; Eisenach and Rüsselsheim in Germany; Ellesmere Port in the UK; and Gliwice in Poland will be closed from March 17.
The production facilities in Hordain in France, Vigo in Spain, and Mangualde in Portugal will be shut down on March 18.
