Cheap South Korean plate keeps Chinese products out of Southeast Asia

China’s plate export prices came to a standstill over the past week on inactivity due to buyers in Southeast Asia turning to cheaper South Korean products.

Fastmarkets’ price assessment for April/May shipments of steel heavy plate export, fob China main port was $460-470 per tonne for the week ended Tuesday March 24, unchanged from a week earlier.
A trader in eastern China said he did not get any bids from overseas buyers after concluding a deal involving A36 plate early last week at $460 per tonne fob.
The transaction involved one of his customers who has a long-term working relationship with him who was willing to pay slightly above market rates. The quantity involved was just 2,000 tonnes.
