Nippon Steel halts blast furnaces as Japan enters state of emergency

Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel will temporarily stop blast furnace output at selected units in response to plummeting steel demand, the company announced on Tuesday April 7.

The announcement came as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday declared a state of emergency and a large stimulus package to help tackle the spread and effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
