EU STEELMAKER CLOSURES 14/05: Italian units still running at low rates, German mill scales back output

Italian steel producers were continuing to run at reduced capacities in the week to Thursday May 14 despite the easing of the country’s Covid-19-pandemic lockdown, with stainless steelmaker Acciai Speciali Terni (AST) planning to suspend production later this month.

Italian industry has been gradually resuming its operational activities since May 4, but most producers were still at reduced capacity because demand for steel remained “extremely low,” sources told Fastmarkets.
“Demand is very slow, [and] the second week after lockdown started low,” one trader told Fastmarkets.
“Most mills are still running at 50% capacity, [at] maximum,” another source added.

AST planned to suspend production from May 25 until June 2 to adjust output...
