EU steel safeguard adjustments will undermine market recovery, Eurofer and IndustriAll say

The definitive decision in the European steel safeguard case review failed to adjust the level of quotas to collapsed demand following Covid-19 crisis and is a “deep disappointment,” European steel association Eurofer and European trade union IndustriAll said in a joint statement on Tuesday June 30.

The European steel sector had called for “significant, short-term changes to the EU steel safeguards to preserve the industry during this pandemic-induced economic downturn,” the statement said.

The European Commission toughened the existing safeguard measures on imports of steel products in a second review of the matter on June 30, but the adjustments fell well short of Eurofer’s requests in April...
