Metalloinvest starts DR pellet pilot output for HBI, DRI production

Russian steelmaker Metalloinvest has started producing pilot batches of direct-reduced (DR) iron ore pellet at its Mikhailovsky GOK to make hot briquetted iron (HBI) and direct-reduced iron (DRI), and these could start making their way to customers in six months, sources estimate.

"Previously, Mikhailovsky GOK pellets were used in blast furnaces, however with improved quality [as a result of implementing flotation technology for the production] they will also be in demand for the production of metallised raw materials," Rinat Ismagilov, director of mining production at Metalloinvest, said.

Pilot batches of DR pellets were delivered to Metalloinvest’s Lebedinsky GOK and its Oskol Electrometallurgical Plant (OEMK) and are undergoing industrial testing for production of HBI...
