LIVE FUTURES REPORT 20/07: LME lead price tops gains, up 1.4%; copper nears $6,500

The three-month price of lead on the London Metal Exchange was the standout performer at the close of trading on Monday July 20, with the metal topping gains over the afternoon despite thin turnover, while a steady uptick in copper futures saw the price push higher over the afternoon.

Lead’s outright price on the LME closed at $1,840.50 per tonne on Monday afternoon, climbing from an intraday low of $1,804 per tonne, while turnover was low at just under 2,500 lots exchanged by the close. News in the afternoon of a successful Covid-19 vaccine trial data from UK-based AstraZeneca boosted investor sentiment in equity markets, and subsequently commodity markets, while advances from US drugmaker Pfizer’s vaccine trials gave the US market a similar boost.
