South32 manganese ore output dips 3% y-o-y in FY2020 amid Covid-19

The West Australia-based miner South32 has reported a 3% year-on-year dip in its manganese ore production in its full 2020 financial year as of June 30, the miner said on Monday July 20.

The company’s manganese ore output was around 5.35 million wet metric tonnes (wmt) in its 2020 financial year, registering a 3% drop from about 5.54 million wmt in the 2019 financial year.
The miner’s manganese ore business has divisions in both South Africa and Australia.

The saleable manganese ore production in the company’s South African division declined by 14% or 309,000 wmt to approximately 1.88 million wmt in its most recent financial year.
“[This is because] we responded to weaker market conditions in the December 2019 half year, reducing our use of higher cost trucking and undertaking an extended maintenance shut at our underground Wessels mine,” the company said.
