Philippines to allow reopening of some miners closed, suspended by previous minister

The Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will allow the reopening of some mining companies shut down or suspended the country’s former environment minister in 2017.

Roy Cimatu, the current environment secretary, said in a virtual briefing on July 22 that the DENR audit teams had conducted on-site inspections at mining companies that filed appeals to restart production, and given recommendations.
Cimatu did not disclose the names of those miners, but said that only those that had rectified their violations and complied with corrective measures would be allowed to reopen.
