Terrafame to serve European EV sector with world’s largest nickel sulfate plant by early 2021

Finnish nickel producer Terrafame continues to lead the charge in the quest for responsible battery chemical production, announcing on Friday September 18 that its long-awaited European battery plant will be operational in early 2021.

Upon completion, the plant will be the largest global nickel sulfate producing facility in the world with a production capacity of 170,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to 1 million electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The nickel sulfate hexahydrate produced there will carry a carbon footprint 60% lower than that of current industry-standard processes, the company said.
Company chief executive Joni Lukkaroinen said in a 2019 interview with Fastmarkets that Terrafame would be the main European EV nickel producer when demand for EVs hit the continent thanks to its unique, environmentally friendly bioheap leaching process.

As of mid-2019, the producer had been ramping up nickel output for three and a half years in anticipation of the EV boom on that basis, when preferential nickel-cobalt-manganese 8-1-1 battery uptake is expected...
