US structural tubing price up, but some resist 2nd mill increase

Prices for hollow structural sections (HSS) in the United States ticked up on the heels of another increase by tube mills; market sources reported increased buying activity recently, but some were reluctant to pay higher prices given uncertain demand toward the end of the year.

Fastmarkets assessed the price for steel hollow sections ASTM A500 Grade B domestic, fob mill US at $760-800 per short ton ($38-40 per hundredweight) on Thursday September 17, up by $20 from $740-780 per ton the previous week. The current price stands up by 5.4% from $720-760 per ton one month ago but down by 10.3% from $860-880 per ton one year ago.
