Speaking at the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference on Wednesday September 23, Ron Knapp said China Hongqiao’s shift to move from its coal-powered operations in Shandong to the hydroelectricity-powered plant in Yunnan was groundbreaking.
“We will be up and running by the end of Q1 next year, that’s how dramatic this whole thing is,” Knapp said.
“The first part of the construction was the ceremony last week where we will build the first potline,” he added.
The Yunnan plant will consist of six potlines and have a total smelting capacity of more than 2 million tonnes per year, according to Knapp. The first potline will have capacity to produce 440,000 tpy, followed by two 600,000-tpy potlines and the final three potlines will have total capacity to...
