US structural tubing price up; more mill increases expected

Prices for hollow structural sections (HSS) in the United States rose again on Thursday October 8, and market participants expect mills to announce additional increases.

“It’s like an earthquake, hurricane and tsunami all at once,” one tube producer source said. “We have to [do another increase] based on where hot-rolled coil is going.”
Fastmarkets assessed the price for steel hollow sections ASTM A500 Grade B domestic, fob mill US at $850-880 per short ton ($42.50-44 per hundredweight) on October 8, up by 1.8% from $830-870 per ton the previous week and the highest level since reaching the same range on March 19. The price is also up by 13.8% from $740-780 per ton one month ago.
