Brazil steel scrap exports jump in September on unusual shipments to China

Brazilian steel scrap exports soared in September both year on year and compared with the previous month due to an unusually significant volume shipped to China by a shipyard under bankruptcy protection, according to national ferrous scrap association Inesfa.

Exports totaled 97,312 tonnes in September, up by 19.7% from 81,295 tonnes in the same month last year and by 75.7% from 55,377 tonnes in August, according to data from the economy ministry published last week. Volumes also grew .

Most of that increase – both on an annual basis and sequentially – was a result of 40,966 tonnes being shipped to China from the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. Excluding that volume, exports would have totaled 56,346 tonnes, a 30.7% year-on-year drop.
