Australian coal being redirected to India, Southeast Asia after China import ban

Steel mills in India and southeast Asia are seeing more spot cargoes of Australian coking coal being offered to blast furnace-based steel mills after China halted coal inflows from Australia.

While the news that steel mills in China had been being verbally notified to stop importing Australian coal came as a surprise to the market, not all traders were caught unprepared and some had bought more fob cargoes instead, with the options to sell these materials to markets such as India, Southeastern Asia and even Europe.
