Rio Tinto’s Q3 copper output drops 18% amid disruptions at Escondida, Kennecott

Rio Tinto’s mined copper production in the third quarter of 2020 fell by 18% against the same period of 2019 due to lower productivity at its Escondida and Kennecott projects, the company said in its quarterly report on Friday October 16.

It mined 129,600 tonnes of copper during the July-September period, of which 82,800 tonnes were from Escondida (down by 9% year on year) and 34,700 tonnes from Kennecott (down by 40% year on year).

The miner attributed the production drop at Kennecott to a 51% reduction in grade as a result of sequencing to optimise molybdenum ore production when the Kennecott smelter shutdown was extended due to unexpected issues following a...
