The South African government
announced the proposed tax on October 22, saying that it was intended to support domestic ferro-chrome production and the chrome value chain.
Some participants in the market believe that the implementation of the proposed export tax could prompt China to impose its own tax on imports of the African nation’s ferro-chrome.
“It is hard to predict exactly how China will react but some of the [possible] reactions could be increased subsidies to support the [domestic] ferro-chrome...
