Ample supply, rising import interest pressure China’s alumina price

China’s well-stocked aluminium smelters and sufficient spot supply continued to pressure alumina prices in the country in the week to Thursday March 4.

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for alumina, metallurgical grade, ddp China was 2,340-2,350 yuan ($362-363) per tonne on Thursday, unchanged from a week earlier.
Market participants said they had heard deals at 2,320 yuan per tonne in southern China this week due to the limited spot buying interesting, but this could not be confirmed.

“We feel that alumina demand in the south was weaker because most consumers are well covered by their long-term supply contracts. Reports of lower deals at 2,320 yuan per tonne were circulating around the market but I’m not sure if it was true,”...
