Codelco betting on Southeast Asia, India copper consumption growth

Chile’s state-owned copper producer Codelco is aiming to quadruple sales in Southeast Asia by 2023 and make a more aggressive push into the Indian market, betting on these markets’ higher consumption growth potential in comparison with China.

Southeast Asia and India are expected to have the highest growth in copper consumption over the next 20 years, Carlos Alvarado, a vice-president for Codelco, was reported as saying.
He said these markets now represented about 8% of refined copper consumption globally but were forecast to exceed 20% in 2040.
