China’s NPI price at new 7-year high; 1.5% nickel ores break records again

The price of China-origin nickel pig iron (NPI) rose in the week to Friday September 3 to a level not seen for more than seven years, amid robust demand from stainless steel mills, with the high cost of upstream nickel ore adding further strength to the price, Fastmarkets has learned.

Fastmarkets assessed the price of nickel pig iron, high-grade NPI content 10-15%, spot, ddp China, at 1,430-1,450 yuan ($222-225) per nickel unit on September 3, up by 15-30 yuan per unit (1.6%) from 1,400-1,435 yuan per unit a week earlier.

The price had reached a 7-year high on July 30 then fell back after a retreat in stainless steel prices in August, but it was now at a new highest level...
