GLOBAL LITHIUM WRAP: Seaborne Asian market plays catch-up with China

Lithium prices in the seaborne Asian market posted strong gains in the week ended Thursday October 21 while they continued to play catch-up with elevated price levels in the Chinese market.

  • Seaborne Asian lithium prices rose amid tight availability and high offers.
  • The price for battery-grade lithium carbonate in China was steady, while that for equivalent grade lithium hydroxide edged upward.
  • Prices for both grades of lithium carbonate in Europe and the United States surged as buyers struggled to secure spot units.
Battery-grade lithium prices in the seaborne Asian market strengthened over the past week, tracking the previous price rally in China, while tight spot availability also provided support.
Fastmarkets’ assessment of the lithium carbonate 99.5% Li2CO3 min, battery grade, spot price, cif China, Japan & Korea was $25-27 per kg on Thursday October 21, up by $3-4 per kg from $22-23 per kg a week earlier.

Offers for lithium carbonate were sparse because spot availability continues to be affected by logistical bottlenecks and Chinese suppliers are reluctant to sell to the seaborne Asian market since they can achieve better...
