Vale successfully tests biochar usage for pellet production; emissions down 10%

Brazilian iron ore producer Vale has successfully tested the use of “biochar” in pellet production for the first time on an industrial scale, the company said on Thursday December 2.

Vale made 57,000 tonnes of the material at its pelletizing plant in the northeastern Maranhão state, with 25% of energy in the furnace generated by biochar, a type of charcoal produced by carbonizing biomass. It reduced carbon emissions in the output process by 10%, according to the company.
